Is Your Dog a Good Neighbor?

Make sure that your dog is well-behaved so that they are a welcome sight on your street.

I love dogs, I admit it.  Our dog, Stella, (pictured), is a constant source of unconditional love. But, no matter how much of an animal lover you are, there’s nothing worse than living next door to an incessant barker or a Great Dane that doesn’t understand human “personal space” boundaries. If you have a four-legged, furry friend, your neighbor’s will always appreciate your efforts to make sure that your dog isn’t that type of dog.

If you’re looking for a solution, consider exploring ‘dog-etiquette’ classes which train your dog to adopt good manners. Whether your dog already has some basic training or not,  you can sign your pooch up for a variety of classes and programs. After these neat tricks, your neighbors won’t be crossing the street to avoid your daily dog walk or hurry inside to get away from your pup.

A few tips to acquire through training programs:

  1. Sit politely for petting: Your dog should be able to tolerate receiving a pet by a friendly stranger when he’s out and about.
  2. Go out for a walk with no trouble: Teach your dog to walk comfortably on a slack lead instead of pulling and straining.
  3. Walk through a crowd: Your dog should be able to move about politely in pedestrian traffic and stay under control in public areas.
  4. Be able to ‘sit’, ‘down’, and stay in place: These basic abilities come in handy in many situations!
  5. Coming when called: Chasing your dog around your neighbor’s yard or in front of street traffic isn’t how you make a good impression.
  6. Getting along with other dogs: Dogs should be well behaved when two owners/handlers and their dogs approach them without causing a stir, barking, or leaping.

As a pet owner, taking on new responsibilities is half the battle of getting your dog’s manners up to par.  Looking for an animal-friendly neighbor can be a tricky challenge. Having a reliable real estate agent on your side is a valuable resource for finding and buying your ideal home for you and your furry friends.
