How to: Make Life Feel More Like a Vacation

Live like you’re on vacation with the right state-of-mind.

Are you in desperate need of a 3-week island vacation but can’t seem to get away at the moment? I sure am! Whether you can’t take the time off work, afford the plane ticket, or have signed yourself up for too many responsibilities, a vacation is sometimes completely off the table.

While we are still working and tending to our daily chores and responsibilities, a vacation state-of-mind can help us to live a little bit like we’re on holiday. In turn, this means we can reduce our stress and appreciate life each day.

Start incorporating these 5 ways how to live and work like you’re on vacation:

  • Start Your Morning Right
How the morning starts will set the tone for the whole day. Consider setting your alarm 20-60 minutes earlier so that you can do the things that you love: read the morning paper in peace, meditate, visualize, enjoy affirmations, exercise, eat a healthy breakfast, or play with the dog.
  • Explore
The best part of vacationing is seeing new cities, landscapes, and people. Taking in new information about our environment forces us to become more aware. Switch up your daily commute to explore your area. Instead of driving to work, take public transport or consider riding your bike.
  • Take Better Breaks, Perhaps Outdoors?
On vacation, it’s easier to forget about work and responsibilities. At home, start to take small breaks from work and chores.  Consider a 10-20 break in an outdoor setting and always leave your phone behind. If you bring your phone with you, you’ll be tempted to check it for the time, emails, or other distractions.
  • Turn Off the T.V.
We don’t go on vacation to watch T.V., so why do we unwind from a long day by watching mindless shows? I admit, I can be guilty…thank you Netflix. Instead of sitting in front of your favorite show or turning to your electronics, opt to go for a walk with loved ones, sit on the patio, or read a book.
  • Try Something New
When on vacation, we get to try all different kinds of food, cafés, and experiences. Don’t allow yourself to get stuck in a routine. Fill your free time with new restaurants, new grocery stores, and spontaneous events. If you’re not sure what to do each week, just schedule time that can be filled with a last minute plan!

With a simple shift of perspective on a daily basis, you can feel grateful for what is around you and look for the beauty in everything.  Of course, I still highly recommend vacationing, but until that time comes, treat yourself to a “vacation state-of-mind”.
