Home Security Tips for New Homeowners

Get settled into your new home and use these home security tips.

Owning a home for the first time can frankly be a little hectic – to say the least. It can take weeks, months or years for many new homeowners to discover and learn all of the aspects about their new home.  In addition, they may also want to learn how to protect their new residence.

Here are some of the best tips for new homeowners to keep their home security tips:

Meet the neighbors: It sounds obvious, but I encourage homeowners to familiarize themselves with their surroundings, and what better way to do that than to meet and get to know the neighbors? Create positive relationships with those around you in the neighborhood and enjoy a sense of community.  These relationships can be helpful if a homeowner needs a neighbor to watch their home or pet, or grab the mail for safe keeping, while away on vacation.

Keep the home up to date: Always make sure that the windows, doors, and locks are maintained and remain in good condition. Perform maintenance as needed, such as sealing cracks in the wall and fixing a loose screw in the front door screen. Regularly test the windows to make sure that they lock properly.

Change the locks: If you’ve purchased a new home, consider your first order of business to be changing the locks. The previous homeowner may have provided keys to friends and family, and with the original locks those people could still have access to your home. As a general rule, avoid leaving any windows open to the public when you aren’t home.

Install security systems: The installation of a security system is one of the most powerful ways that a homeowner can prevent intrusion and secure their home. High-tech security systems are now able to notify homeowners when their home is jeopardized, as well as displaying live video of the interior and exterior of the home. We highly recommend calling Joe at Scripps Ranch Security!
