Common Mistakes Homeowners Make When Furnishing Their New House

You may be excited about your new home – but avoid these common mistakes!

Moving into a new home is exciting. And, if you’re like me, decorating can be just as exciting!  From obsessing over paint color to picking out new furniture, it’s understandable that you’ll want to start decorating and furnishing as soon as possible.  Before swiping the credit card for your special, new purchases, read below to avoid the three most common mistakes made by new homeowners.

  • Don’t buy everything at once – Resist the temptation…. I know you want to make those empty rooms feel like home, sweet home, but relax and take your time.  Decorating can prove to be an expensive endeavor and certainly isn’t the time for instant gratification.  However, homeowners often rush to cram the rooms full of stuff rather than planning it out properly. Decorating is great, but try to focus on one room at a time.
  • Don’t trust your eye, trust your tape measure – Measuring a space is imperative before you purchase anything. While your perfect chest of drawers ”fits” into your bedroom corner, does it look like a white elephant that needs replacing?  Scale the furnishings to fit properly in the spaces.
  • Don’t decorate around a legacy piece – It might be your grandmother’s rocking chair or your husband’s mahogany desk, but trying to decorate with specialty pieces often ends in a headache. Odds are that they’ll push you into a certain layout or color scheme – even one that might be completely wrong for you or your new home.

As an excited new homeowner, it’s tempting to decorate your home just the way you want it and in record time.  Be sure to make smart decisions so you can enjoy your home for many years to come.  Contact Jenn Blake Real Estate Group at Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty in San Diego, California at 858-663-6788, for all of your home buying and selling needs.
