Brighten Up Your Home This Fall with These Tips

As the nights get darker, bring light back into your property.

While you may not realize it, an inadequate amount of natural light in your home may lead you to feel tired or stressed. Humans often act and feel better in a home that has plenty of natural light and light-inspired décor. If your home is as dark as a cave during the fall and winter months, you may need to bring in lighter finishes to play off of the darker ones.

Check out the following tips to turn your dark home into a light and bright abode.

Walk through your home and assess the dark areas.

If you’ve been living in your home for a while, you’re likely used to its dark areas. Living and family rooms that don’t bring in enough natural light, dark paint color schemes, and dark furniture could be making your interiors feel like a black hole. Before you start painting and redecorating, first assess what would bring the best change into your home.

Mix and match rich color neutrals and white in your décor.

If your home needs neutrals for warmth, look to colors such as camel tan and mushroom gray. The latest color trend, gray, works well with white, and both look great when placed next to dark wood floors.

Add recessed lighting fixtures.

Adding recessed lighting can brighten up the the space without being obtrusive to the eye. Consider installing a dimmer switch to have versatile lighting control.

Hang a well-placed mirror.

Hang a large mirror to reflect light or a beautiful view. You’ll be surprised at how much light a strategically placed mirror can bring into the room.  Avoid placing a mirror on a wall that doesn’t reflect the outdoors.

Replace solid interior doors with glass doors.

Glass doors provide instant light by creating a seamless flow of natural and artificial light. If possible, avoid shutting rooms off by a solid door and opt for glass instead.

Bring natural light indoors.

You can’t quite replace the effect of adding windows to a room. Adding windows to kitchens and living rooms are obvious places to add windows, but stairways and landings are often dark spots and can also be great places to consider adding a window.
